Henry Ossawa Tanner

Title: Painter, illustrator, and internationally recognized Black artist

Henry Ossawa Tanner was one of the most important Black artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He became internationally respected for his paintings, especially religious works, and his life also reflects the barriers Black artists faced in America before he found greater opportunity in France.

Carl B. Stokes

Born June 21, 1927 — Died April 3, 1996

Title: Lawyer, politician, judge, diplomat, and first Black mayor of a major U.S. city

Carl B. Stokes made history when he was elected mayor of Cleveland in 1967, becoming the first African American mayor of a major American city. His career later included work as a judge, news anchor, and U.S. ambassador, making him an important figure in Black political history.

O. C. Smith

Born June 21, 1932 — Died November 23, 2001

Title: R&B, jazz, and soul singer

O. C. Smith was a smooth-voiced singer best known for his hit recording of “Little Green Apples.” His music moved through jazz, R&B, soul, and popular song, giving June 21 a strong Black music connection.
