Title: Lawyer, politician, judge, diplomat, and first Black mayor of a major U.S. city

Carl B. Stokes made history when he was elected mayor of Cleveland in 1967, becoming the first African American mayor of a major American city. His career later included work as a judge, news anchor, and U.S. ambassador, making him an important figure in Black political history.

O. C. Smith

O. C. Smith

Born June 21, 1932 — Died November 23, 2001

Title: R&B, jazz, and soul singer

O. C. Smith was a smooth-voiced singer best known for his hit recording of “Little Green Apples.” His music moved through jazz, R&B, soul, and popular song, giving June 21 a strong Black music connection.
