In July 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams performed a landmark operation at Provident Hospital in Chicago after James Cornish arrived with a serious stab wound to the chest. Williams repaired the torn pericardium, the sac surrounding the heart, and Cornish survived. The procedure became one of the most important early achievements in heart surgery and strengthened the reputation of Provident Hospital, one of the first Black-owned and Black-staffed hospitals in the nation.
