On July 27, 1919, Black teenager Eugene Williams was killed after drifting across an unofficial racial line at a Chicago beach. Police refusal to arrest the white attacker helped spark days of violence, making Chicago one of the most devastating sites of the Red Summer.

By July 27, 1942, Black Gullah Geechee families in Harris Neck, Georgia, had been forced off ancestral land seized by the federal government for a World War II airfield. The displacement destroyed a self-sufficient Black coastal community, and descendants have continued fighting for recognition and land justice.
