1982 — Rickey Henderson breaks the single-season stolen-base record
On Aug 27, 1982, Oakland Athletics star Rickey Henderson stole his 119th base of the season, surpassing Lou Brock’s modern major league record. Henderson finished the year with 130 steals and later became baseball’s career leader with 1,406.
2008 — Barack Obama becomes the first Black major-party presidential nominee
On Aug 27, 2008, delegates at the Democratic National Convention formally nominated Senator Barack Obama for president. He became the first Black presidential nominee of a major United States political party and won the general election that November.
