Bernard Shaw
Born May 22, 1940 — died September 7, 2022
Journalist and CNN’s first chief anchor.
A Chicago postal worker’s son and Marine who willed himself into journalism, Shaw anchored CNN from its 1980 launch for two decades — reporting live from Baghdad as the first bombs of the Gulf War fell, covering Tiananmen Square, and moderating presidential debates with famous directness. He set the standard for the generation of Black anchors who followed.
Marcelite Harris
Full name: Marcelite Jordan Harris
Born January 16, 1943 — died September 7, 2018
United States Air Force major general.
A Spelman graduate from Houston, Harris became the first Black woman general officer in the Air Force and the first Black woman major general in the entire American military, after a career of firsts in aircraft maintenance command. She was buried with full honors at Arlington.
Sam Cunningham
Full name: Samuel Lewis Cunningham Jr.
Born June 15, 1950 — died September 7, 2021
College football legend and NFL fullback.
Cunningham’s dominant 1970 performance for integrated USC against all-white Alabama in Birmingham became football legend — the game often credited with speeding the integration of Southern college football. He went on to become the New England Patriots’ all-time leading rusher, and his brother Randall became an NFL star quarterback.
