1800 — Gabriel’s planned rebellion against slavery is thwarted
On Aug 30, 1800, a severe storm disrupted an uprising planned by the enslaved Virginia blacksmith Gabriel and hundreds of co-conspirators seeking freedom. Informants exposed the plot, and authorities arrested scores of Black people and executed Gabriel and more than two dozen others.
1967 — Thurgood Marshall is confirmed to the Supreme Court
On Aug 30, 1967, the United States Senate confirmed Thurgood Marshall as the nation’s first Black Supreme Court justice. Before joining the Court, Marshall had led the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and won landmark cases including Brown v. Board of Education.
1983 — Guion Bluford becomes the first Black American in space
On Aug 30, 1983, astronaut Guion “Guy” Bluford launched aboard space shuttle Challenger on the STS-8 mission. He became the first Black American in space and later completed three additional shuttle flights.
