Roy Wilkins

Born August 30, 1901 — died September 8, 1981

Civil rights leader, journalist, and longtime executive director of the NAACP.

Wilkins guided the NAACP through major battles over school desegregation, voting rights, employment, and federal civil rights legislation. He helped organize the 1963 March on Washington and represented an institution-centered strategy for dismantling segregation.

John Kani

Full name: Bonisile John Kani

Born August 30, 1943

South African actor, playwright, director, and anti-apartheid cultural figure.

Kani co-created and performed in landmark plays including Sizwe Banzi Is Dead and The Island, using theater to expose apartheid to the world. Later roles as T’Chaka in Black Panther and Rafiki in The Lion King brought his voice to global popular culture; some sources report 1942 as his birth year.

Fred Hampton

Full name: Fredrick Allen Hampton

Born August 30, 1948 — died December 4, 1969

Black Panther Party leader, organizer, revolutionary socialist, and founder of Chicago’s Rainbow Coalition.

Hampton built alliances across racial and neighborhood lines while organizing free breakfast, health, and political-education programs. He was killed at age 21 during a police raid coordinated with the FBI, making his life central to debates about state power and Black liberation.

Robert Parish

Born August 30, 1953

Basketball Hall of Famer, four-time NBA champion, and Boston Celtics legend.

Known as “The Chief,” Parish combined durability, defense, rebounding, and an efficient high-release jump shot across a record-setting 21 NBA seasons. He anchored the frontcourt of the Celtics teams that won three championships in the 1980s.

Gerald Albright

Born August 30, 1957

Jazz and R&B saxophonist, bassist, composer, producer, and recording artist.

Albright became a leading voice in contemporary jazz through a powerful tone, technical command, and deep R&B feeling. His solo recordings and work with artists including Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, and the Temptations bridge jazz improvisation and popular soul.

Theo Peoples

Full name: Theoplis Peoples III

Born August 30, 1961

Soul singer and former lead vocalist of the Temptations and the Four Tops.

Peoples holds the rare distinction of singing lead for two of Motown’s greatest vocal groups. His commanding tenor carried the Temptations’ later hit “Stay” and helped preserve classic group traditions for new audiences.

Michael Michele

Birth name: Michael Michele Williams

Born August 30, 1966

Actress and longtime film and television performer.

Michele built a strong dramatic career through New York Undercover, Homicide: Life on the Street, ER, Ali, and later series including Queen Sugar and Dynasty. Her roles expanded the visibility of complex Black women in network drama.

Trevor Jackson

Born August 30, 1996

Actor, singer, songwriter, dancer, and television leading man.

Jackson grew from Broadway and Disney projects into mature roles in American Crime, Superfly, and grown-ish. His parallel music career and screen work made him a prominent multi-hyphenate performer for younger Black audiences.
