Born August 1, 1894 — died March 28, 1984

Educator, minister, theologian, civil rights leader, and longtime president of Morehouse College.

Mays helped shape the intellectual and moral foundation of the modern civil rights movement. As president of Morehouse College, he mentored generations of Black leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., and taught that education, faith, discipline, and public service could become tools for freedom.

Full name: Geoffrey Lamont Holder

Born August 1, 1930 — died October 5, 2014

Trinidadian American dancer, choreographer, actor, director, painter, composer, and costume designer.

Holder brought Caribbean movement, color, imagination, and commanding presence into American theater, dance, film, and art. He won Tony Awards for directing and designing costumes for the original Broadway production of The Wiz, helping give the landmark Black musical its unforgettable visual identity.

Rapper, songwriter, producer, author, activist, and cofounder of Public Enemy.

Chuck D became one of hip-hop’s strongest political voices through Public Enemy. His booming delivery and socially conscious writing turned rap into a platform for history, media criticism, Black pride, and organized resistance, influencing generations of artists who use music to confront power.

Rapper, songwriter, actor, television personality, and 1990s hip-hop figure.

Coolio rose from the West Coast rap scene to worldwide recognition with music that blended street storytelling, social reflection, humor, and crossover appeal. “Gangsta’s Paradise” became one of the defining rap recordings of the 1990s and expanded hip-hop’s reach across global popular culture.

Augustus Nathaniel Lushington

Augustus Nathaniel Lushington

Born August 1, 1869 — died 1939

Veterinarian, agricultural educator, and pioneering Black medical professional.

Lushington became the first African American to earn a veterinary degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1897. He later practiced in segregated Lynchburg, Virginia, where his skill and persistence helped establish a place for Black professionals in veterinary medicine.

Ronald H. Brown

Ronald H. Brown

Full name: Ronald Harmon Brown

Born August 1, 1941 — died April 3, 1996

Attorney, political leader, U.S. secretary of commerce, and Democratic National Committee chairman.

Brown became the first African American to lead a major American political party and the first Black U.S. secretary of commerce. His rise through law, national politics, and presidential leadership marked an important expansion of Black power within federal government and party institutions.
