Title: Educator, civil rights activist, minister, and inventor
Hugh Mason Browne was an educator and civil rights thinker who helped shape early Black education after Reconstruction. He served as principal of the Institute for Colored Youth, now connected to Cheyney University, and also held a patent for a device designed to prevent sewer backflow.
Nina Mae McKinney
Born June 12, 1912 — Died May 3, 1967
Title: Actress, singer, dancer, and early Black film star
Nina Mae McKinney was one of the early Black movie stars, breaking through at a time when Hollywood offered very few serious opportunities to Black performers. Her performance in Hallelujah brought her international attention, and her later work in Europe helped expand Black presence in film and television.
Bishop Barbara Clementine Harris
Born June 12, 1930 — Died March 13, 2020
Title: Episcopal bishop, civil rights advocate, and religious trailblazer
Barbara Clementine Harris became the first woman consecrated as a bishop in the Anglican Communion, a historic step in religious leadership. She was also active in civil rights and spoke publicly against racism, sexism, and homophobia in both church and society.

Bernie Hamilton was a film and television actor whose career stretched across several decades. He is best remembered by many as Captain Dobey on Starsky & Hutch, but his work also includes important appearances in Black film and television during an era when steady roles for Black actors were still limited.
