Harmonica player, country and blues musician, songwriter, and Grand Ole Opry pioneer.

Bailey became one of the earliest stars of the Grand Ole Opry and is remembered as a foundational Black figure in country music. His harmonica playing connected blues, country, and old-time music, reminding us that Black musicians helped shape American roots music from the beginning.

Millie Lawson Bethell Paxton

Born 1875 — died July 2, 1939

Educator, civic leader, women’s organization worker, and Black community builder in Virginia.

Paxton worked in Roanoke’s African American schools and was active in Black women’s organizations, mutual aid, and civic life. Her legacy reflects the community leadership of Black women who built institutions, educated children, and strengthened local life during segregation.
