Claudia Tate

Born December 14, 1946 — died July 29, 2002
Literary scholar, professor, critic, and African American literature specialist.
Tate became a respected scholar of Black women’s writing, African American literature, and psychoanalytic literary criticism. Her work helped deepen the study of Black literature in universities and preserved the importance of Black women’s voices in American letters.
Roy McBride

Full name: Roy Chester McBride
Born December 29, 1943 — died July 29, 2011
Poet, spoken-word artist, educator, and Minneapolis community voice.
McBride became known as a street poet whose work spoke to Black life, city life, struggle, humor, and survival. His poetry and community presence made him an important cultural voice in Minneapolis and beyond.
