Peter Tosh

Birth name: Winston Hubert McIntosh

Born October 19, 1944 — died September 11, 1987

Reggae revolutionary and founding Wailer.

Alongside Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, Tosh built the Wailers, then made solo anthems of defiance — "Legalize It," "Equal Rights," and the co-written "Get Up, Stand Up." Murdered in his home at forty-two, he remains reggae’s most uncompromising voice for justice.

Toots Hibbert

Full name: Frederick Nathaniel Hibbert

Born December 8, 1942 — died September 11, 2020

Leader of Toots and the Maytals.

Hibbert’s 1968 song "Do the Reggay" gave the music its very name, and "Pressure Drop," "54-46 That’s My Number," and "Funky Kingston" carried Jamaican sound to the world with a voice often compared to Otis Redding. He won a Grammy in his seventies and sang with fierce joy to the end.
